What is the Area of Law?
Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) is a prevalent issue in today’s society and affects people of all genders. Many countries have laws and policies in place to prevent and address SGBV.
Laws have been put in place to protect and provide justice to survivors of SGBV. These laws criminalize acts such as rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, and female genital mutilation. The perpetrators of these crimes can be charged and sentenced depending on the severity of the offense.
However, despite these laws, SGBV remains common due to cultural and societal attitudes towards gender and sexuality. Many victims of SGBV do not report the incidents due to fear, stigma, or lack of understanding of their legal rights.
Efforts are ongoing to raise awareness on SGBV, and to increase the reporting of incidents. Governments, NGOs, and advocacy organizations continue to work together to provide education, support, and resources to those affected by this crime, as well as enforce harsher penalties on offenders.
